Sometimes it is just bad luck, but a number of common problems can be prevented. It is therefore important to take the following steps before you drive:
1. Check the oil level: It is very important that the engine contains enough oil. The oil ensures the lubrication of the moving parts in the engine and is part of the cooling of the engine parts. If the engine is running make sure the motorhome is level, pull the dipstick out and wipe it off with a cloth. Put the dipstick back and pull it out again. You can now see if there is enough oil in the engine. Do you have to top up? Then make sure you don't pour in too much. You can check with the Advertiser what type of oil needs to be added.
2. Check the coolant: Whilst the coolant reservoir is transparent, this often contains a red/pink liquid or sometimes even a blue/green liquid. There is a line on the side of the reservoir that indicates the minimum and maximum, you should make sure that the coolant level is in between these indicators. Coolant ensures that the engine does not overheat and is therefore very important!
3. Check the tyre pressure: Too soft or too hard tyres have an effect on driving behaviour. But the wrong tyre pressure can also cause blown tyres! Therefore, check regularly whether the pressure is correct. Tyre pressure varies with temperature and so it is important to measure it in the morning before you have driven far.
There are of course a number of breakdowns that cannot be prevented. Do not drive if you see a red or orange light on the dashboard, instead contact the breakdown service, insurance and the Advertiser.
